What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds, created through advanced technology rather than extracted from the earth. They are made from carbon and develop the same fundamental diamond crystal structure as natural diamonds, giving them essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties. The difference is not what the diamond is, but where and how it was formed. A natural diamond grows deep within the earth over geological timescales; a lab grown diamond is created in a controlled environment using sophisticated diamond-growing technology.

This distinction is important because lab grown diamonds are sometimes mistakenly grouped with diamond simulants. They are not the same. Cubic zirconia, moissanite and other simulants are materials that can resemble a diamond but have different chemical and physical properties. A lab grown diamond, on the other hand, is diamond. Its laboratory origin is precisely what distinguishes it from a mined diamond.

A Diamond Grown Differently, Not a Different Kind of Diamond

The word “lab grown” describes the origin of the diamond, not its quality or appearance. Once cut and polished, a lab grown diamond can possess the brilliance, fire, durability and optical characteristics associated with diamond jewellery. Even experienced observers cannot reliably determine whether a diamond is natural or lab grown simply by looking at it; specialised gemological equipment and testing are used to identify its origin.

How Are Lab Grown Diamonds Created?

Lab grown diamonds are created using two established methods: Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT). Both begin with a diamond seed, but use different technologies to grow the crystal.

CVD grows diamond layer by layer inside a controlled chamber, where carbon-rich gases provide the carbon needed to build the crystal.

HPHT recreates the extreme pressure and temperature conditions under which diamonds form, allowing carbon to crystallise around a diamond seed.

While their growth methods differ, both can produce gem-quality diamonds. Their growth characteristics can be identified through advanced gemological testing, which is why independent certification is important.

Are Lab Grown Diamonds Certified?

Yes. Lab grown diamonds can be independently graded and certified, just like natural diamonds. A recognised gemological laboratory evaluates the diamond's characteristics and identifies its laboratory-grown origin. An IGI lab grown diamond report, for example, documents the diamond's origin and evaluates the relevant 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat Weight, along with other identifying characteristics.
