IGI Certified vs Non-Certified Diamond Rings: What Bengaluru Buyers Must Know

by ONYA on Apr 06, 2026

A couple walked into a jewellery store in Jayanagar last year, fell in love with a solitaire ring priced at ₹85,000, and bought it on the spot. The jeweller assured them the diamond was “VS clarity, F colour, excellent cut.” No paperwork changed hands beyond an invoice. Six months later, when they tried to exchange it at another store, the gemologist’s assessment told a different story — SI2 clarity, H colour, a good cut at best. The stone was worth roughly half what they’d paid.

This isn’t a rare horror story. It’s the predictable outcome of buying a diamond on trust rather than documentation.

What an IGI Certificate Actually Verifies

The International Gemological Institute grades diamonds across four core parameters, commonly called the 4Cs: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. But knowing the acronym is less useful than understanding what each parameter means in practice.

Colour is graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The difference between an F-colour and an H-colour diamond is visible to a trained eye, and significant in price — sometimes 15 to 25% per grade at higher carat weights. A jeweller’s verbal assurance of “near colourless” can mean anything from E to J depending on who’s talking.

Clarity describes internal inclusions and surface blemishes under 10x magnification. A VS1 stone has very slight inclusions that a skilled grader can see with effort. An SI2 stone has noticeable inclusions under magnification that may be visible to the naked eye in some cases. That’s not a trivial distinction when you’re spending lakhs.

Cut is the only parameter fully determined by human craftsmanship. IGI grades cut as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor — and cut drives brilliance more than any other factor. A D-colour, flawless diamond cut poorly will look dull next to a G-colour, VS1 stone cut to Excellent grade.

Carat weight is straightforward but not immune to misdescription. Without a certificate, you’re relying on the jeweller’s scale and honesty. IGI certifies carat weight to two decimal places.

And then there’s the IGI report number itself — a unique identifier tied to that specific stone, verifiable on IGI’s website in real time. A legitimate report number will pull up the exact stone’s grading report online. This is the single most important verification step Bengaluru buyers should take before completing any purchase.

How to Read an IGI Grading Report

When a jeweller hands you an IGI certificate, look for these elements in order:

The report number at the top. Type it into igi.org to confirm the certificate is genuine and matches the stone in your hand. Counterfeit certificates exist — they’re less common for reputable retailers but not impossible in unregulated markets.

The shape and cutting style. Round brilliant is standard; princess, cushion, oval, and pear cuts are common alternatives. Make sure what’s described matches what you’re looking at.

The measurements and proportions. For a round brilliant, the table percentage, depth percentage, and crown and pavilion angles affect how light behaves inside the stone. An excellent cut typically has a table between 54–60% and a total depth around 59–62.5%. These numbers matter.

The clarity plot — a diagram showing the position and nature of inclusions. This is your map of the stone. If you’re buying a VS2 or SI1 stone, ask the jeweller to show you where the inclusions are using the plot as a guide. A jeweller uncomfortable with this question is worth noting.

The fluorescence rating. Strong blue fluorescence can make a lower-colour diamond appear whiter in sunlight, which some buyers prefer. Others find it makes the stone look hazy. Neither is universally right, but you should know before you buy.

Finally, for lab-grown diamonds specifically, the IGI certificate will state “Laboratory Grown” clearly on the report. This is not a downgrade — IGI applies identical grading standards to lab-grown and natural diamonds. If you’re buying lab-grown, this label confirms you’re getting what you paid for and at a price that reflects lab-grown value, not natural diamond pricing.

Red Flags in Bengaluru Diamond Stores

Bengaluru’s jewellery market spans everything from legacy stores on Commercial Street to modern branded showrooms in Koramangala and Jayanagar. Quality and documentation practices vary widely.

The most common red flag is certificates that aren’t IGI or GIA. Some stores offer diamonds with “in-house certificates” or reports from obscure domestic labs. These are not independent third-party assessments. An in-house certificate tells you only what the seller decided to put on paper.

Watch for certificate switching — a certificate is shown for one diamond, but a different stone is set in the ring. This is harder to verify post-setting, which is why buying a certified loose stone and having it set separately (or buying from a retailer who provides certification for set stones) is worth considering.

Be cautious when a jeweller discourages you from verifying the report number online. Any legitimate retailer will encourage you to check. Hesitation here is telling.

And pay attention to carat weight language. “Diamond weight” on an invoice without specifying it refers to the centre stone is common misdirection — some stores quote total diamond weight including tiny accent stones, making a 0.40-carat centre stone sound like a larger purchase.

For buyers comparing stores, our guide on how to buy ethical diamond jewellery in Bangalore covers documentation practices and what to ask retailers in more detail.

Why Lab-Grown Diamonds Make Certification Even More Important

There’s a version of the diamond market where lab-grown stones are misrepresented as natural. This happens. And there’s an opposite problem — natural diamonds being sold with inflated grading certificates from non-independent labs.

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, optically, and physically identical to natural diamonds. They’re not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite. But they do trade at different price points — at 893527-5e.myshopify.com (ONYA), lab-grown diamond jewellery is priced at roughly 20% of equivalent natural diamond pieces, which means buyers get significantly larger, higher-quality stones for the same spend. That price difference is real and substantial, and it only works in the buyer’s favour when the certification is honest about what you’re getting.

Every piece at ONYA comes with full IGI documentation, so the grading is independently verified — not the store’s word, but an internationally recognised lab’s assessment. Pieces also carry BIS hallmarking on gold settings, which is the Bureau of Indian Standards certification confirming the purity of the gold used.

If you’re curious about how lab-grown and natural diamonds compare across multiple dimensions beyond price, the complete comparison guide for 2026 goes into the specifics.

BIS Hallmarking: The Other Certificate You Should Check

IGI covers the diamond. BIS hallmarking covers the gold. In India, BIS hallmarking on gold jewellery is mandatory under Bureau of Indian Standards rules, and it certifies the purity of the metal — 18K, 22K, or 24K — with a tamper-proof marking that includes the BIS logo, the year of marking, and the jeweller’s identification.

Unmarked gold is a separate but equally common problem. A piece sold as “18K gold” without hallmarking has no independent verification. The difference between 18K (75% pure gold) and 14K (58.3% pure gold) is meaningful in durability, resale value, and aesthetics.

When you’re evaluating any engagement ring in Bengaluru, check for both: the IGI report for the diamond, and the BIS hallmark on the setting. These two documents together give you a complete picture of what you’re actually purchasing.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy

These aren’t meant to catch anyone out — they’re basic due diligence that any confident jeweller will welcome.

Ask to see the original IGI certificate, not a photocopy. Verify the report number at igi.org while you’re in the store. Ask whether the diamond is natural or lab-grown, and confirm this matches the certificate. Request to see the clarity plot and ask the jeweller to identify the inclusions on the actual stone. Ask for the BIS hallmark certificate or show the physical hallmark on the jewellery. If the price includes making charges, ask for those to be itemised separately from the diamond and gold value.

And if a jeweller can’t answer these questions, or answers them in a way that doesn’t match the documentation, take that as useful information.

What Bengaluru’s Engagement Ring Market Looks Like in 2026

The city has become one of India’s most active markets for lab-grown diamond jewellery, driven partly by a tech-educated buyer base that researches purchases carefully and responds well to transparent pricing. Bengaluru’s lab-grown diamond wedding jewellery trends in 2026 reflects a shift toward buyers who want documentation, not just a beautiful piece — they want to know what they’re getting, and they’re comfortable asking.

That shift is good for everyone except sellers who rely on opacity. IGI certification isn’t a bureaucratic inconvenience. It’s the difference between a purchase you understand and one you’re taking on faith.

The couple from Jayanagar could have avoided their situation by spending two minutes verifying a report number. That’s the entire point of the certificate — it exists so you don’t have to take anyone’s word for it.
